The mythological science fiction film featuring Prabhas has shattered records with an impressive pre-sales gross of over Rs 120 crore on the first day alone. Today, the much-anticipated movie made its big-screen debut amidst fanfare, with fans joyously celebrating outside theaters. It’s truly a monumental moment in cinema history.
Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD, featuring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Kamal Haasan, hit the screens worldwide on June 27. The movie intertwines Hindu mythology in a futuristic setting where a chosen few embark on a mission to safeguard the unborn child of Deepika Padukone’s character, believed to be Kalki, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
The film features Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan, who previously shared the screen in a 1985 movie called Geraftaar. Nag, in an interview with Film Companion, shared his experience working with these legendary actors. He mentioned feeling a bit overwhelmed giving them direction on their performances, especially with Amitabh Bachchan. Nag found it a bit “silly” to guide them on acting, considering their vast experience and talent. He recalled his first day of shooting with Bachchan, feeling a bit lost after a two-year break from directing. It must’ve been quite an experience!
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Kalki 2898 AD is anticipated to rake in a whopping Rs 200 crore globally on its opening day and a staggering Rs 500 crore over the first weekend.
In North America, the film has already sold 1 million tickets and grossed over $3.5 million on the first day, setting a new milestone as the biggest opening for an Indian film. In India, it’s not far behind, with over 2 million tickets sold and a whopping Rs 60 crore in earnings on the opening day.
The film’s stunning visuals and unique storyline have garnered a lot of praise since its release. With such a strong start, it’s highly likely that the Prabhas-led movie will outperform other blockbuster films like Salaar, RRR, and KGF, which gained global recognition in theaters. Kalki 2898 AD has already secured Rs 58 crore in pre-sales, indicating a promising future at the box office.It would set a new record for 2024 and mark another grand opening for Prabhas.
