JEE Main and JEE Advanced are among the most coveted university entrance examinations anywhere across the world for Class 12 students. This year, JEE (Main) will be conducted from January 6th-9th 2020 while JEE (Advanced) will be conducted on May 17th, 2020. Since 2018, JEE (Advanced) has started being conducted online.

JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced) are both national level entrance examinations held yearly for the sake of offering admissions in the premier engineering institutes in India.

But to properly understand both of them, these are the key differences between JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced)

Difference Based on Target Students:

JEE (Main) is conducted by NTA and are for students seeking admission at the IITs, NITs, CFTIs (Centrally Funded Technical Institutions) as well as other engineering institutes run by the state government and some private institutions. JEE (Main) acts as an eligibility criterion and only the top-ranking candidates in Paper-1 of JEE (Main) can appear for the JEE (Advanced) exam.

JEE (Advanced) is conducted by the IITs themselves for students seeking admission at all the IITs in the country.

Difference Based on Eligibility:

For JEE (Main) any student who has taken at least 5 subjects in Class 12th from a government recognized institute, and has passed the year, is eligible to attempt the exam.

The minimum average required for admission at the IITs, NITs, and CFTIS is 65% marks for the SC/ST candidates and 75% for the rest.

For JEE Advanced, the top 220,000 rank holders of the JEE Main exam will be eligible to appear for the JEE (Advanced) exam

Difference Based on the Number of Attempts:

For JEE (Main) a student can take the JEE Main exam 6 times and only in 3 consecutive years. The exam is conducted twice per year.

For JEE (Advanced), a student can appear for the JEE Advanced exam for a maximum of 2 times and it should be in the consecutive years.

Difference Based on Difficulty Level:

Since only the top rank holders of JEE Main are eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced exam, so naturally JEE Advanced will comparatively be a bit more difficult. But it should also be kept in mind that, for JEE Main, the competition is quite high, since there’ll be a lot more students attempting it.

The aim of JEE Main will be to test your understanding of the basic concepts taught in the 11th and 12th. While JEE Advanced will also include topics outside of those from 11th and 12th and it will also assess the candidate’s problem-solving skills

Conclusion:

Above mentioned, were the key differences between JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced). I hope all your doubts are now cleared and you have a clear idea about both the examinations and despite the differences, how both the exams are interlinked, by JEE Main being the stepping stone to JEE Advanced.

Finally, I wish the Best of Luck to all of those preparing for the exam. Ace it!
