Maharaja enjoyed a remarkable inaugural week in theaters, showcasing Vijay Sethupathi’s prowess and shutting down any skeptics who doubted his abilities.
Maharaja is considered Vijay Sethupathi’s comeback movie not because he took a break from acting, but because it signifies his return to solo commercial success after a considerable period. Reports from industry sources indicate that Maharaja has grossed over Rs 50 crore within its first week, with more than Rs 35 crore generated from ticket sales in India alone. With this positive trajectory, Maharaja is poised to potentially cross the prestigious Rs 100 crore mark at the box office.
Many questioned Vijay Sethupathi’s ability to draw crowds after taking on supporting roles in films featuring other stars. In the past year, he portrayed the antagonist in Jawan alongside Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan, a movie directed by Atlee that soared past the Rs 1000 crore mark in ticket sales. Preceding that, he portrayed the villain in Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, which amassed Rs 400 crore at the box office. And a year earlier, he took on the role of the antagonist in Thalapathy Vijay’s Master.
While Sethupathi’s roles in those blockbuster movies were crucial, some doubted his potential as a lead actor. However, the audience’s response to Maharaja has silenced those skeptics. Not only has the Tamil version been well-received, but the Telugu version is also surpassing expectations. Reports suggest that the film has earned over Rs 6 crore from the Telugu states and is on track to cross the Rs 10 crore milestone there. Maharaja, helmed by Nithilan Swaminathan, narrates the tale of a barber seeking vengeance against those who have wronged him.
